father: Richard Powell
born: April 20, 1956
married: June 3, 1982
re-married: August 1, 1997
Richard grew up just outside of Denver, Colorado, with his father and brother. He was always interested in art and especially
photography.
When he graduated from high school, he moved east and went to a prestigious photography school. He met Mary Ann Thomas through
a fashion show that he was photographing. They dated for a few years and then married.
Richard loves his children very much, and has a special bond with Kat. While Richard thinks it is very cool that Kat is a
nova, he is even more pleased that she has signed a contract with the Aeon Society; his point of view on the whole issue is:
whether or not novas have evolved to the point where they are better than humans or not, it is still their responsibility
to look after and care for their surroundings, which right now includes regular humans. His view is partly influenced by
the fact that he is big into animal rights.
mother: Mary Ann Thomas Powell
born: January 12, 1959
married: June 3, 1982
died: June 27, 1995
Mary Ann grew up in Manhattan, and moved around in the northeastern US for a few years after college, meeting Richard Powell
in Boston.
They married and moved back to Manhattan; shortly after giving birth to her second child, Mary Ann developed cancer. She
died when Kat was five.
brother: Eliot Powell, 23
born: November 23, 1984
Eliot grew up in Manhattan, with his family. His mother died just before he turned 11.
Eliot was in all the high school plays, and loved acting more than anything else in school. He got along with Kat, only occasionally
finding her worship of him annoying, but he never really formed a strong bond with Livvy, partly due to the age differences.
Eliot's now living in the city, working as an actor in Broadway plays and other productions, visiting his family whenever
possible.
He's dating a girl named Juliet Browning fairly seriously; they've talked on and off about marriage, but they are not yet
engaged.
Eliot doesn't know what he thinks about whether or not novas are better than humans, no longer human, etc, but he does think
that Kat is pretty special. She's always been special, and her eruption kind of just drove that point a little further home
for him.
step-mother: Jessica (Jess) Baker Powell
born: May 26, 1961
married: August 1, 1997
Jess grew up in New Hamphsire. After she graduated from high school, she took off and started traveling around the world.
She took some art and writing classes in different countries, but she never got a formal college education.
She spent most of her time traveling, writing about what she saw and experienced, and selling her art.
Around 1995, she moved back to the states to do the same thing, traveling and writing and selling her art; however, she met
Richard, and he persuaded her to stay in New York for a time, and then they fell in love and married.
Some of their family's best vacations were inspired by her; now that Richard's children are getting older, Jess has been thinking
about asking one of them to watch Livvy for a month or so so that she and Richard can spend that time traveling around the
world together.
Jess is wary of most novas, at least until they can get their shit together and figure out how to have a human / nova society
that works well. She is also very glad that Kat joined up with the Aeon Society, which seems to be devoted to helping humans.
half-sister: Olivia (Livvy) Powell, 9
born: June 8, 1998
Livvy lives with her parents and (until recently) her older sister. She doesn't know her older brother very well, but she
adores her sister, and always has. She always trailed after Kat and was one of the few people Kat allowed to sit around watching
her when she was working. Livvy is determined to follow in her sister's footsteps, and spends a lot of her time taking apart
old radios and putting them back together. What she doesn't have of Kat's natural aptitude for mechanical devices, she makes
up for in sheer stubbornness, and may become very talented in that area, given time.
Livvy hasn't given a lot of thought to the nova situation, particularly the fine details of humanness and responsibility.
However, her "worship" of Kat has only intensified since Kat erupted. She thinks it's the coolest thing ever.
